The last generation from Puerto Rico

1899-1991

A BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY OF
 PAULA GONZALEZ ESTRADA QUILES

AS TOLD BY
 VIRGINIA QUILES MALDONADO
April 26,2006

PART ONE

Introduction to part of the story:

In the town of Hatillo, where our grandparents are natives, Fidel Gonzales, the son of a Spaniard descendant, who's last name was Gonzales. He was the son
of a woman with the last name Rivera. She was a Taino descendant from the few Indians left in PR.
The Taino grandmother, inherited lands that used to belong to the Indians. That land was passed to our grandfather Fidel.( this story was told by grandfather Fidel) . I remember the story, because I have always been a good listener.
Fidel, married Juana Maria Estrada, the daughter of a Spaniard man, named Marcos
Estrada, who came from Spain. Marcos had very interesting story, or I can say
mysterious. He was an educated man, a soldier. Also he always carried a book and read
it. To my knowledge, it was the old testament. could be that he was a Spanish-Jew.
According to Fidel's story, Marcos settled in San German PR, and brought lots
of gold, and started to buy lots of land in Bayaney, barrio of Hatillo. Grandma Juana , parents where Spaniards, that settled in Maricao, a town next to Lares.

PART TWO

This is the second chapter.........The main character in this story is Papa Fidel.
He was the one that took time to tell story's. I never forget that he used to say: If we have
something bad to say about anybody, adage he used...(La mejor palabra es
la que no se dice).
Well ,let me start with abuela, Paula, she was the daughter of Fidel Gonzales Rivera and Juana Maria Estrada Justiniano. When abuela Paula was ten years old, her mother passed away and she was left with her sister, Alicia, a few years younger than her. Papá Fidel needed somebody to take care of them. At that time the only one that could care for them was Mamá Moncha, because Alicia was lame or retarded. In those days , people that live in the country didn't even see doctors.
Mamá Moncha, was Mamá Juana's sister, and she adored Alicia. Papá Fidel fell in love with Mamá Moncha, he made her his common wife. I presumed they were happy. But abuela Paula as a teen moved to live with her madrina Juanita Ramos. Papá Fidel thought she would have a better future and more opportunities to find a husband.
Indeed he was right! She met Pantaleon. He was very robust ,good looking and good
personality(.I think a personality like Fife).
The Godmother Juanita Ramos, arranged the wedding, because she liked Pantaleon a lot . He was an exceptional and kind man.
Abuela always talked about her wedding. It was the best wedding of the Barrio Bayaney, on those days.
Pantaleón was the son of Juan Quiles e Quiles and Maria Quiles Goyco. Juan Quiles, was the son of a Spaniard and Maria the wife, our grandmother, she came
from Dominican Republic. She was the cousin of Juan, our grandfather.

PART THREE

Grandpa Pantaleon, was from a family of three boys, and four sister. The older brother's name was Hermógenes and we called him Tio Monge. Then came tio Domingo and Pantaleon .The sisters where: Tia Adela,Tia Angelina, Tia Mary and Tia Rosa. ( Que nombres raros!) but those names were very old spanish....
All my uncles had large families. That means, we have many cousins in NY,
Chicago,Puerto-Rico, all scattered in US. The only cousins Close to us were Tia Rosa's children. They are in NY. they look for us, we always stay in touch. It is a big family.
After Pantaleón and Paula got married, they moved to a house near Papa Fidel
and mama Moncha and they help grandma Paula to raise all the children.
Pantaleón and Paula started a family: The first born was Pablo.he was born in 1916. Carmen was the second born in 1917, before WWI. Covina and Angel, 1918 and 1919 during the war.Euripides, Virginia,Candida Rosa, Blanca Iris, America, William, they were born during the twenties, I don't know the exact years. Then came the last group Johnny, Virginia, Luz Enilda and Reynilda.

PART FOUR
After the WWI, Pantaleón got settled in Bayaney, near Papa Fidel and Mama Moncha, and continued adding more children, moving from one house to another larger one .The last house in Bayaney was in el kilometro 21, which was popular for the fights
and los guapos, which Pantaleón was a leader. As abuela told us that the younger kids were born in El 21.
Abuelo Pantaleón. was a hero in his own right... When he came back from the Army, he told everybody how he won recognition for controling a horse with rabies .As we know he was a wagoneer in the Service . They used wagons with horses. There wasn't any jeeps at that time, as far as I know for the Puerto-ricans
camps. He was also ,the first man in Bayaney to drive a car.
Well, continueing with Pantaleón and Paula's children....The oldest one Pablo got married to Rosa Velez. They had two sons: Victor and Angelo. Covina or Jovita, married Rafael Acabá,and have two sons Rafaelito and Joseph( Chato).
Pablo, was very smart in business and became a good merchant. He started his own business and took charge of the family. He decided to move the family to Mayagüez. It was a good idea, because the younger children were raised in a better environment and better schools.
The World War II started. Euripides joined the army and Pablo ran the business.Angel was a hard worker, also a merchant. Euripides(Fife), got married to Celina and later on , Angel got married to Mercedes.During the War, Carmen migrated to NY. Fife didn't stay in the Army, he was discharged. He decided to migrate to NY, followed by Rosin and William.

PART FIVE

Finally, the rest of the family of Grandpa Pantaleón and grandma Paula migrated to NY. Fife also brought his family at that time, Celina and the two older kids, Blanca and Junior. Then followed Angel and Mercedes with two older kids.
Grandma came with America, Rey and Carmen, who, came back to NY. A couple of months later, Lucy and Virginia joined the family. Pantita was the last one to arrived in NY. We were searching for a better life. So we started moving to California in less than five years.
We all were united in California.
The single girls got married and started their own family. Rosin, America, Fife and Angel had more children. All this new generation were borne in California.

One of the saddest sentences I know is "I wish I had asked my mother about that"

FUNNY STORIES

When Carmen and Covina were very young ladies (señoritas), Pantaleon
used to have small parties for the jibaros, his peones and friends.they played music , using guitars or cuatro, the guitar of the country.
Los jibaros used to get drunk with rum canita.that was a very strong homemade drink. They get too happy and tell Pantaleon they wanted to dance with the
señoritas de la casa. Then Panta (like we used to call him), would force the two
señoritas to dance with the jibaros. Covina was very pretty and Carmen, very attractive. I guess the jibaros fantasied being with them!
Abuela told the story that the jibaros were bare feet, and Covina to get back at
them, would step on their feet. The ones with shoes, either were muddy or had horse's poop!
Carmen Told the jibaros all kind of insults. The girls became angry and Panta punished them.Abuela couldn't do much ,because he was the boss and she was a little scared of him.
Another story : Pantaleon was a leader of del kilometro 21. On election day, he would pick up all the jibaros and give them rides to Hatillo. That was the voting place. Some of them had never ridden in a car or pick up truck. They were like sardines in a can! Sometimes, they would even throw up because it was their first ride in a car.

Let me tell about Rafael Acaba, when he was escorting Covina. Panta didn't like him that much, but Rafael was a wise guy. He use to( echarse un palito de ron )with
Panta. With that he tamed el viejo. With that, he allowed Rafael to visit Covina. Rafael was like a wolf, but charming. He would sing songs and serenade Covina. Finally Pantaleon let him married her.
One night ,Abuela Paula heard noise outside, and when she open the door there was Papa Fidel calling and scared. He told abuela: 'Covina murió!' He had a machete in his hands to get Rafael. He thought Rafael had hurt Covina.
I heard he was very jealous and protective of the grandchildren.

Tito, let me start with a definition and description of good qualities I saw in brothers
and sisters. The mistakes and problems we all had. I just think it was our destiny,
we all had a very hard life, but the good Lord Jesus, erased our errors and sins., and we
became Victorious ,and SURVIVED!

PABLO

The Oldest one : Pablo, been the oldest, he was spoiled by Mama Moncha y Papa
Fidel. As he grew up he was good in Math. This made him the excellent merchant
he was. At seventeen, he get married to one of the prettier girls in the Barrio Bayaney,Rosa
Velez.
From that relationship, they had two children: Victor and Angelo, very intelligent Sons.

CARMEN

Carmen is the single sister. As a young lady, she was very ambitious,in a special way.She always wanted the best bedroom and best furniture. Also she was the one that open the path for the family to move New York. She was the first to come to NY.

JOVITA (Covina)

Covina, was the one conquered by the Prince Charming. At seventeen, she married Rafael Acab and bored two sons :Rafaelito and Chato(that is his nick name). I feel more comfortable calling him Chato. Covina is very artistic. As a young girl, she started embroidering and getting her own money. she have always been artistic. She is the best at cooking, crocheting, and knitting. just say ,'look at that' to her, and her hands does miracles!
As I told you about, Covina and Rafael, were married for over five decades. They saw their fourth generation. One of the grandchildren, Joey ,became an astronaut, and is the pride of the family. They have six grand children. some of their grandchildren already are parents themselves.

ANGELO
circa 1957

Angel. He is the more quiet of the family. But with lot of integrity and very smart. we could call him Jack of all trades. He was a merchant, mechanic, carpenter, self made architect and engineer. As a young man, as he travel as a merchant in Ponce PR, he met Mercedes, a very good looking young lady and married her. From that relationship, they have Three boys and five girls. All of his kids got married and have children.

EURIPIDE(FIFE)

Now Fife,he was the happy go lucky guy of the family.Good personality and good looks, women were always chasing him. But he fell in love with Celina and married her.
She was a humble and tolerant person. The completely opposite of him. These couple really
had a lot of children. They had seven boys and four girls. All of their children got married and have lots of children and gave them many grandchildren. Fife already have the fifth generation.
Continuing with Fife and his clan.He was a hard worker.' Always inventing businesses, and has a good relationship with with his children. The result, as the children grew up in San Francisco, they started working at early age,and all became very hard workers. the son Ricky owns a big construction business.

CANDIDA ROSA (ROSIN)

Now, let me talked about our beloved sister Rosin. Abuela used to say that she cried in the womb. I never understood, why she said that, It could be, because, she had some kind of ESP.
She was bright and above all had a good heart. As a young girl, she took care of the younger siblings. She used to go to the Plaza del Mercado to buy groceries and then come home and cook in el fogón, which was a home made Stove. She would have to climb on a chair to reach it
. As a young lady she was already making a living, always had a job so she could have money to spend on her younger sisters. Finally, the day came when she left Puerto-Rico. Fife sent the airline ticket,so she could earn money and help the family left behind in PR. I was one that benefit from the nice cloths (fabrics), she sent from NY. But she decided, finally, to think about herself. She fell in love with an Italian guy, named Frank Scaglione, and got married. They had one son, Jimmie and two daughters; Betty and Pauline. Rosin enjoyed the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
she also enjoyed life. She was the soul of every party. She would stand up and dance, even if she didn't know how. She did not care. she would say:"I came to this party to have fun!"and she did!
This story is to make a tribute to my beloved sister ,Rosin.
We miss her immensely....

AMERICA

America, another beloved sister. I remember her as always, being
close to abuela, doing errands, and helping us all.
Helping people was her main concern. she grew up and became a very pretty young lady who enjoyed gatherings and parties.
Once, she became old enough , she met Samuel Delgado, and decided to get married. they had three children. The first born was Diana(nana), Sandy ( Kimmy) and Sammy Jr (sonny). Her Children and grand children, were her pride and joy. America was very friendly and had a lovely personality. Always inviting Family and friends to her house. She would cook and serve delicious food, play romantic songs in the record player.like Javier Solis songs.we all love, and miss her. I'll always have a missing link in my life...

WILLIAM

William is the comedian of the family. well sometimes we thought that he was telling fibs...but not really. He is comical ,something like Don Rickles. They have to invent stories for the jokes. As a young kid, he knew what he wanted from life.He was barely eighteen when he migrated to NY.As soon as he arrived, he looked for a job. He was always looking for white collar jobs. so he would eventually became foreman or supervisor, and the superiors of the company, became his friends. He married Amina Legaretta( Mony) when he was twenty two. From that marriage, they have two daughters Wilma and Patricia. He always made his home in Chicago.
He became a car dealer. Always getting white collar jobs. He used to say he was not
born to be a laborer .He always like to be the boss.
Eventually he re- married. His wife's name is Lucy Marrero. One of his dreams was to move back to PR to lived there forever. He have accomplished that!

JUAN PANTALEON  (PANTITA)

Pantita, means little Pantaleón. He used to hate his nick name.
He was raised by mama Moncha y Papa Fidel, and they spoiled him a lot. as a little boy, between the age of seven and eleven years old, he helped Papa Fidel in his Kiosk, selling vegetables and fruits. He always have shown potential to be a good merchant. Like all us, he came to NY and started working and saving money to open a business. He was always searching for different (negocitos). I recalled seeing him, always with money. He is a very proud person and never like to depend on anybody.
His favorite (adage) saying is: Is dangerous to be alive! (Es un peligro estar vivo!).
Pantita , married Porfiria, a lady from Mexico, with two sons. they love Johnny (Pantita). Also he has a daughter from a previous relationship. He have always lived in Chicago

VIRGINIA
circa1982

I had double pneumonia, i was a sickly child . I used to hear Mita, my mother telling everybody about my sickness. Maybe she wanted everybody to feel sorry for me.So I grew up a very sensitive person, which I don't like to be this way. But maybe, helped my personality. I'm always in search of Neverland, a dream that never ends. I'm hard on myself... I also treat myself to certain pleasures, like buying clothes. l love to cook and feed my family and friends, do crosswords and use the internet a lot. kind of crazy,I like telenovelas, to read about movies stars and singers.
Hedson is to passive .God must have send him to me. Otherwise I would be in trouble ,because I'm too aggressive and bad tempered.
When I was sixteen,i became very spiritual . I went to Bible school, preached and became very active in church, becoming a leader, as president of the young people. At the age of twenty two,i came to California and met that passive guy Hedson Maldonado ( muy
distraido). But he was my destiny. I married him and bared two children; Ronnie & Debbie.
Hedson, also has a son by a previous marriage; Hedson Jr.
We have being througt lots of rocky roads and rough times, but we reached our golden anniversary.

LUZ ENILDA  (LUCY)

Lucy is one of the younger of the family.
As a very young kid all the older siblings kind of spoiled her, it was the way that I perceived, i was the one closer in age to her, she was daring, used to do sports,go for errands for neighbors, and older sisters and brothers, I always remember her, trying to protect me,because
I was a little (boba)., means kind of shy. When we were teens,
went together to church and to the bible institute. To prove how daring she was, at eighteen, she started driving in N Y, the first one of all the sisters and cousins. Arriving Los Angeles, she needed to drive around herself ,Rey and Viña, so she went and bought a 1955 Chevy car. On those days, not too many young girls owned a car. we all were so proud of her!
Through the Maldonados brothers, she met Fernando Gutierrez
and after a short relationship, they decided to get married. They have two boys and two girls, Boys: Fernando, Armando. Girls: Naomi and Kathy

REYNILDA

15 years old,circa 1953

Being the baby of the family, she was spoiled by the older sisters and brothers,Abuela thought that she couldn't even function without her,as a child she felt kind of bad, when
when Rey was a young kid , children thought our mother was the grandma, because Mita was getting close to sixty.. our mother was proud of Rey, because was cute, very artistic,
she used to dance any music that was played. At seventeen she left school and started working in a plastic company, a job that Virginia found for her, because she was a minor
nobody will hire her. She met Orlando Maldonado, and after dating for a year, she decided to marry him, in those days was very young for him and for her, but we all were tired, of the same routine we had at home. I guess we were looking for independence.
From that relationship of Orlando and Rey , six children were born. Rey was very young
but soon she learned to be a full time mother and a housewife. Her children: Jose Jr, Danny, Lisa, Wayne, Johnny, and Mia. All the sisters had trials and sorrows, but we are very strong
and we always survived, I feel that the Lord Jesus is with us. If anybody have some tale or
a funny story to tell, you are welcome!, to add it.

This Brief story is a memorandum of our dear ones that are not longer with us.
Thanking Tito for gathering all the information. and have the desire, and think about the generation to come.
Also dedicate to the third and fourth generations, all the accomplishments and goals and satisfactions have given to us, been great business man and women, great educators, engineers ,artists , writer and for excellence one astronaut. Joseph Acaba. We all very proud. God bless all! Virginia,April 27,2006

Quiles Family reunion July 1, 1989 San Luis Obispo,

1989 was the last family reunion of matriarch Paula Gonzales Quiles. Thanks to the major efforts of Sandra (Quiles) Carlson, daughter of America and help from many others this historic event was made possible.

Sorrow
This is from the memory of Reynilda when she was ten years old

She only knew her grandfather papa Fidel and grandmother mama Moncha for the first ten years of her life before leaving to the United States and never seeing them again.

Papa Fidel was close to her family partly because he had no other family,he only had two daughters, Paula and Alicia. Alicia did not have any children ,and died many years before.

In the days before television people use to tell stories,so Papa Fidel was a good story teller. He would walk to their house and sit on the front porch for hours, until late at night telling them scary tales. He was very old and forgetful and when it was time to leave he would forget to put on his shoes and start walking home bare foot. The children who loved him very much would giggle as he walked away without shoes . when he got far away they would yell "papa! papa! you forgot your shoes!"and he would walk all the way back and everyone would be laughing with love.

So it must have been impossible to imagine that this family that he had been a part of all of their lives would one day disappear from his life. It was assumed that as the family began to immigrate to America that Papa Fidel and Mama Moncha would also immigrate after everyone else. But that day would never happen. They were in their late eighty's, old and fragile. It was considered too dangerous first to fly them in a plane of those times and then the harsh winters in New York were too severe for their physically weak body's.Before that unexpected late decision was made to leave them behind a friend of the family recalled that papa Fidel went excitedly all over town telling everybody he was going to New York to be with his family. It must have been devastating for him, Paula and the others to realize they might never see him again. It was too late to change their minds, they had to make the sacrifice for the future well being of the family, there was no future for them in Puerto Rico.

Papa Fidel lived for three more years after their departure,he died in 1952.Mama Moncha lived another 20 years and died in the 1970s. In this picture he sent to his family in America he is wearing the suit he bought for the trip he thought he was going to make to New York.

circa 1950, Fidel was 85 years old
Fidel Gonzales Rivera, father of Paula Gonzales Estrada Quiles

New York City,1950
The fatherless family was living in Brooklyn New York, like millions of immigrants before them they came seeking a better life. Like all immigrants they came for work and education, unfortunately many would have to sacrifice education so that they could have food, clothes and a place to live.Virginia and Lucy were working teens who for fun would go to Puerto Rican Pentecostal church on Sundays, probably one of the few places parents felt safe to allow their teens to visit alone. Paula felt sad she did not attend church with her daughters and eventually she began to attend with them bringing 12 year old Reynilda with her. Paula went to church for no other reason than to be entertained and have something to do with her daughters. So it was with great surprise that the preacher during one of his sermons tells the congregation that it was a sin to allow one's daughter to wear pants to church, everyone knew he was speaking about Paula allowing Reynilda to wear pants to church. After church Paula was furious at what the preacher said and she refused to attend the following Sunday saying it wasn't even her who was wearing the pants to be called a sinner.

The Pentecostals have a way of prayer where they close their eyes raise their arms and speak to God in a soft monotone voice facing heaven, Paula was trying her own form of prayer by adding bouncing lightly in her seat. Fife who rarely ever went seen her do this and when he got home he told her he did not like her bouncing up and down in her prayer because she looked like a car's piston.

Paula and Pantaleon civil marriage certificate August 25.1915

Panteleon and Paula civil marriage was in August 25,1915 in Lares.

During prohibition Abuela Paula made and sold illegal rum from a still in the house.Once the local police came and told her to stop making it,she ignored him and continued.

The only members of the Pantaleon family we still keep in touch was with his youngest sister Rosa Quiles Pagan. Rosa came to live with them for some time as a child and became close to the family. The Rosa Vicente Pagan family left for New York a few years after the Quiles family left Puerto Rico.

email address; TitoQuiles@outlook.com

This web site does not belong to me,it belongs to all Quiles descendants,to show our children and grandchild where their heritage once came from.In a short time we will no longer be Puerto Ricans just like we are no longer pure Spanish,Taino or African.Today's generation are mixing with the people around them, soon our proud to be Puerto Rican heritage will be just a memory or forgotten.

I regret not thanking enough and giving credit to Virginia Quiles whose love of family started the Quiles family reunions from her own back yard in 1980 and the following reunion at Alpine Village beer garden where she rented a hall large enough to accommodate the Quiles clan.Without her ability to corral the Quiles under one roof there never would have been the reunions, without her excellent memory and her willingness to share it we would not have these small bits of Quiles family history that otherwise would have been lost forever.

I would also like to thank Carmen Quiles for being the leader of our Quiles clan because she changed all our destinies by being the first to set out for America in search of better opportunities and leave poverty of Puerto Rico in 1945. Her first goal upon arriving and finding work was to bring the rest of her family and within three years she accomplished that goal. Maybe some of us might have migrated anyway but it was her influence and leadership that brought all the family here and for that she had never received credit or thanks until now years after she died. Without Carmen Quiles we might never have left Puerto Rico and most of us would never have been born.

These stories are hopefully close to the facts, one thing I have learned in collecting information for this blog is than everyone has their own perception of what happen in the past. Please do not be offended if what you read is not correct I only had three people tell me these stories that are their memories of many years ago.For example both Carmen and Virginia had two different memories of who was the first family member to leave Puerto Rico.

If anyone would like to add a memory, a funny story they heard,or anything that has to do with Quiles history please send it to me,no matter how small or how many stories you can give, all will be appreciated.

INTERVIEW WITH PANTALEON QUILES 1983

Interview with Abuelo

https://app.box.com/shared/jo1bx5gy0j

In 1983 I went to Puerto Rico and stayed at Pantaleon house in Manati. We sat on the balcony overlooking the street taking shots of rum and smoking cigars as I tried to record his history.

As far as I know there has not been any descendants of Paula Quiles born in Puerto Rico since the family migrated to United States in 1945.

With only a few exceptions almost all second and third generation Quiles have not married Puerto Ricans, most have never been to Puerto Rico, most don't speak Spanish or cook the food.

Puerto Rican is not a religion,it is not a race,we marry anyone we want from any culture, race, religion. Puerto Rico was just an island our ancestors came to and created their own mixed race and culture.

Rosin was the first generation Quiles to marry a person not Puerto Rican, Frank Scaglione an Italian American. To communicate with each other they both had to give up speaking their native languages of Spanish and Italian to speak only English with each other and their children.
